What Drugs are Tested in a Drug Test?

Urine drug testing is the most common and customizable screening method available in the drug testing world.  Oftentimes drug testing panels are ordered from companies, courts, or individuals without knowing what drug testing panel is needing to be analyzed.

The most common drug panel options include the 5,10 and 12 panel drug tests and we are here to discuss exactly what is tested in each type of drug test panel.

5 Panel Drug Test

The 5 panel drug test, specifically the urine, is by far the most popular test and the drug test of choice for the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The drugs tested in a DOT 5 Panel drug test are as follows:

  1. Marijuana metabolites
  2. Cocaine metabolites
  3. Phencyclidine
  4. Opioids** – codeine, heroin, morphine, oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydrocodone & hydromorphone
  5. Amphetamines -amphetamine, methamphetamine, MDMA & MDA

**Some common names for the new semi-synthetic opioids include OxyContin®, Percodan®, Percocet®, Vicodin®, Lortab®, Norco®, Dilaudid®, and Exalgo®

10 Panel Drug Test

As we dive deeper into drug testing panels it is important to note that a 10 and 12 panel drug test will always include the drugs tested in a 5 panel.

These tests are more common when looking for something specific not included in a standard 5 panel drug test.

The drugs tested in a 10 panel drug test include:

  • Amphetamines
  • Barbiturates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana
  • MDA
  • Methadone
  • Methaqualone
  • Opiates
  • PCP
  • Propoxyphene

The standard 5 and 10 panel drug testing panels are typically collected at a collection site and analyzed at a SAMHSA Certified Laboratory.  If you need a rapid results test, the 5 and 10 panel is available for a rapid result in most areas Nationwide.  The turn around time for a rapid results test are typically available the same business day (for negative results) and if a specimen is non-negative, we send the specimen to the lab to perform confirmation testing at no additional charge which may delay the result an additional 24/48 hours.

Expanded Opioids Panels

With the current climate of the opioid epidemic, many companies and individuals request to include expanded opioids to their drug testing panel.  This option will cover most prescription drugs and the Expanded Opioids test can be added to any 5 or 10 panel drug test.

Expanded opioids include:

  • Hydrocodone
  • Hydromorphone
  • Dilaudid
  • Oxymorphone
  • Oxycodone
  • Lorcet
